Pass Christian woman dies after being struck by SXSW drunk driver

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A Mississippi woman has become the third person to die after being struck by a drunk driver in Austin last Thursday.

Pass Christian native Sandy Le was pronounced dead Monday at the University Medical Center Brackenridge.

"There was a drunk driver that crashed into a music festival in Austin, Texas," said Sandy Le's brother-in-law Stuart Gates. "She had been on life support, been in critical condition and we wound up losing her this morning."

According to Gates, Le was a former student at the University of Southern Mississippi and the Mississippi School for Mathematics and Science. Gates said Le was living in Austin and wanted to get her residency there and go back to school.

"She was just awesomely quirky," said Gates. "Very compassionate and one of those that in twenty six years probably got more out of life than any of us will."

Gates says losing Sandy Le only adds on to the several tragedies the family has been through in the last few years. He said the family lost their house in Katrina and their shrimping business was also affected by the BP Oil Spill. Aside from that, Le's uncle disappeared last July from his dive boat and was never found.

In order to help Le's family out with medical and funeral expenses a fund has been set up at Fundly.com. If you go the page, make sure to search for "assistance for Sandy Le".

"It's not just a donation page," said Stuart. "We realize not everybody can do that. You can literally go on this page and just click a support button and you don't think it means a lot but they've been following and they know, and it means the world."

Family of Sandy Le passed a message along with Stuart and asks that everyone pray for the other families and the other victims.

Stuart said the funeral has not been scheduled yet, but he said it will likely be in Pass Christian on Saturday.

The Mississippi All-Stars wrapped up its third practice at Hattiesburg High school ahead of the 31st Mississippi/Alabama All-star game on Saturday at noon. Although Saturday’s contest at Southern Miss’ M.M. Roberts Stadium in Hattiesburg is just an exhibition, the Mississippi players are taking it seriously.
