Southern fashion meets charitable cause in Mississippians' clothing business

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Steven Nelson of Hattiesburg and Jason Welch of Mendenhall are co-owners of the southern clothing company, The Good South. But their bow tie business is not only about fashion.

"Regardless of where we go, and regardless of who we meet, a common question is scholarship money," said Nelson.

Nelson and Welch are both regional admissions counselors for the University of Mississippi. The two guys knew they wanted to form a scholarship fund of some sort, so they combined their love of Southern style and created a philanthropic business model.

"At the end of the year, we'll donate a portion of our proceeds to The Good South scholarship fund," said Nelson.

The first round of scholarships will be awarded this spring to four qualifying students, ranging from 250 to 500 dollars.

"Academics are important, but we're also looking for students who excel in leadership and in the community," said Nelson of the applicants, who must be either a high school senior or a college undergraduate. "Although we are a southern company, any student is eligible regardless of where they're from."

All items of this online company are made right here in the South, which includes bow ties, t-shirts and caps.

"Both being from Mississippi and raised in Mississippi, we love all aspects of the South," said Welch. "Culture, but especially the style, which is why we love bow ties."

Not only does each purchase help college students, but it is also personally recognized by the co-owners. Nelson and Welch send a handwritten thank you note with each delivered purchase.

"We try to give as many personal touches as we possibly can," said Nelson.

The scholarship deadline is April 1. Further information can be found at http://www.thegoodsouth.com
