Store owner thwarts robbery

ALBANY, GA (WALB) -

An Albany store owner who fought off an would-be robber is speaking out.

Mark Dean was closing up the Kwickway Food Mart on North Jefferson late Monday, when he saw man he knew was up to no good.

"When I saw him coming we were walking outside and I said 'I'm not going to be inside' so I pushed him off," Dean said.

Police say a masked gunman tried to force his way inside the store but Dean wasn't going to let that happen.

"The guy was trying to come inside so I pushed him hard to the other side."   Dean hit his head on pole during the tussle. An Albany Police officer happened to be driving by at the time and came to his aid.

The robber managed to escape.   "He must have been desperate for money," Dean said.

Dean says this is first something like this has happened at the store. It's in a relatively safe location, because of its proximity to Phoebe Putney Hospital.

"It's right in front of the hospital. A lot of people. Nothing like this happened in 12 years, nothing like this has happened."

Nothing was taken. No one seriously hurt.

Police hoping anyone with information about the would be robber will give them a call at Crimestoppers; 436-TIPS.
