LAUREL, MS (WDAM) -

Jones County has a new, comprehensive care facility for cancer patients. Thursday night, a ribbon was cut to open the South Central Cancer Center, which is located just across the street from South Central Regional Medical Center.

It includes a large chemotherapy area, patient navigators and an Appearance Center to help patients with physical aspects of their recovery.

The hospital has been working on the project for about one year.

"This is what cancer care is about, it's about comprehensive care, because cancer is not just a physical diagnosis," said Dr. Shannon Penland, hematologist and medical oncologist with the South Central Cancer Center.

"We want patients to know that we are here, that we are here to serve them, that we have all the facilities, all the doctors, all the care that they will need," said Kathy Eason, R.N., coordinator for the nurse navigators at the cancer center.

The facility also includes a private chemotherapy area.
