With another cold snap passing through the Pine Belt, the Salvation Army on Highway 49 in Hattiesburg is opening its shelter to the homeless and others who need a place to go to get out of the cold.
The shelter, which is normally closed during the day, will remain open as long as temperatures remain below 40-degrees.
Salvation Army Social Services Director Francis Nixon says this year's harsh winter weather has drastically depleted many of the items needed to operate the shelter and care for the homeless.
"Besides monetary donations, the things that we need are blankets, jackets, hats, gloves, and socks that we can give to the homeless when they come to stay a night with us," said Nixon.
Donations can be dropped off at the Salvation Army located at 5670 Highway 49 South.
