Head-on collision in Hattiesburg leaves one dead

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

A head-on collision in Hattiesburg has taken the life of a William Carey University student.

According to Hattiesburg Lt. Jon Traxler, at approximately 2:25 a.m. Hattiesburg police received a call of a head-on collision on Highway 49.

Traxler said Roberto O'Neil Stanton, 32, was driving southbound in the northbound lane of Highway 49 just north of the Forrest County Multi Purpose Center when he crashed into a vehicle.

The driver of the other vehicle was pronounced dead at the scene and has been identified as Michael Iler, 21, by Forrest County Deputy Coroner Lisa Klem. The passenger, Iler's wife, was seriously injured and was taken to a local hospital where she is being treated. According to Traxler, she is in serious conditions.

Stanton was taken to a hospital for minor injuries and then taken to jail. He is being charged with DUI - negligence of driver results in death or disfigurement and DUI - mutilation/disfigurement/death of another.

The accident is still being investigated by HPD.

According to Lt. Traxler, Iler was a student at William Carey University. His wife is also a student at the university.
