USM, BancorpSouth host home buyer workshop

Southern Miss and BancorpSouth hosted a home buyer education workshop Saturday. Southern Miss and BancorpSouth hosted a home buyer education workshop Saturday.
HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Some first-time home buyers from the Hattiesburg area got some useful tips free-of-charge Saturday, during a seminar hosted by Southern Miss and BancorpSouth. 

A Mississippi Home of Your Own home buyer education workshop featured important information on credit, financing and downpayment assistance.

It was co-sponsored by USM's Institute for Disability Studies.

The Home of Your Own program is in its 17th year.

"Sometimes you have a goal, whether it's to buy a car or a house, pay for a vacation, so this is just letting people know, if their ultimate goal is to be a homeowner, that these are things you can go through in order to prepare yourself to become a homeowner," said Pam Peterman, vice-president of BancorpSouth.

The Home of Your Own program has helped more than 500 people with disabilities become homeowners.

    On July 10, 2017, 16 servicemen were killed when a KC-130 crashed in a soybean field in Leflore County.  The plane flew out of Cherry Point, North Carolina on its way to deliver personnel and equipment to the Naval Air Field El Centro, California when it went down in Mississippi.  15 U.S. Marines and one Navy Corpsman were killed.
