HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Some first-time home buyers from the Hattiesburg area got some useful tips free-of-charge Saturday, during a seminar hosted by Southern Miss and BancorpSouth.

A Mississippi Home of Your Own home buyer education workshop featured important information on credit, financing and downpayment assistance.

It was co-sponsored by USM's Institute for Disability Studies.

The Home of Your Own program is in its 17th year.

"Sometimes you have a goal, whether it's to buy a car or a house, pay for a vacation, so this is just letting people know, if their ultimate goal is to be a homeowner, that these are things you can go through in order to prepare yourself to become a homeowner," said Pam Peterman, vice-president of BancorpSouth.

The Home of Your Own program has helped more than 500 people with disabilities become homeowners.
