Southern Pines Animal Shelter looking for foster homes

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Spring is right around the corner and that only means one thing, puppy and kitten season!

In order to prepare for the season, Southern Pines Animal Shelter held a foster shower on Saturday. The shelter is recruiting fosters to house their puppies and kittens before they go on Petsmart Charities Rescue Waggin’ and are taken to shelters up North.

The furry little friends can be under your care for a few days until it’s time for them to leave. The shelter is expecting to need 50 - 100 foster homes in the next few months.  Those who attended the event Saturday received a special foster training session.

“We do have some puppies ready to go into foster,” said SPAS Veterinarian Alicia Hatch. “Right now we have about fifteen looking for a foster home just for a week or so, they leave on the eleventh. We don't have any kittens ready to go today but we are taking applications for kitten fostering. We're also taking donations to help our kitten and puppy fosters, kitten food, formulas for puppies, litter boxes, toys, anything that can be helpful or money to help pay for some of the needs.”

If you would like to be a foster parent to a kitten or puppy just stop by the Southern Pines Animal Shelter to fill out an application.

The puppy and kitten foster shower was sponsored by Southern Pines Second Chance Thrift Store.

The Mississippi State Department of Health reported there are now 12 cases of West Nile Virus in our state Thursday morning. Although, every case is serious, that number pales in comparison, to the 247 cases in 2012. Still, you have to put a human face onto these figures to really know what this virus is capable of doing. For the past five years, the lasting affects of West Nile have been overwhelming for the Courcelle family. "You see it in the movies. You don't ever think you...
