LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A major federal grant is about to put University of Louisville's Speed School on the cutting edge of digital manufacturing research.

The engineering school was chosen to participate in President Obama's digital manufacturing and design institute. It's part of the president's plan to establish a national network of universities to take part in advanced manufacturing research.

"We're seeing something of a manufacturing renaissance," said Dr. Glen Prater, a professor of mechanical engineering at Speed School, "driven by lower energy prices and just a growing recognition of how important of how making actually things is to the health of modern economy."

The $70 million grant is expected to jump start the university's efforts to build an applied science and engineering park on a 39 acre site south of Belknap Campus.
