Downtown Evansville bar decides to go smoke-free again

Posted: Updated:

The Peephole Bar and Grill in downtown Evansville has decided to go smoke-free.

Right after the Indiana Supreme Court lifted Evansville's smoking ban, Peephole owner Steve Alsop says his bar allowed smoking again. But after a couple of weeks of listening to what his patrons want, Alsop says the decision has been made to go back to being a smoke-free business.

"We tried smoking for two weeks here and the market told me that they preferred non-smoking. My customers, long time customers, voted with their dollars. I mean, business wasn't quite what it was before. That's the way it should work in a free market. Privately owned business, that's how we determine what we do," Alsop says.

The city administration is encouraging local bars to remain smoke-free despite the court ruling.
