New surveillance video shows moments before attack of GRTC security guard

Posted: Updated:

Richmond Police just released new video of that attack on a GRTC security guard. The suspect has been on the run since November. Meanwhile, that security guard continues to recover.

Police hope this enhanced video will generate more tips. In the video, the 2400 block of West Cary Street seems to be empty until a dark-colored SUV pulls up and parks. About ten seconds later, Jack Newsom, the GRTC security guard, is seen walking into the frame. That's when the driver gets out.

"He walks around the pole, comes up behind him as if he was stalking him, which is, I believe, what he was doing," says Detective Joe Fultz with Richmond Police.

Newsom's back is turned during the entire clip. Police say the man attacks Newsom, takes his wallet and cash then continues to kick and punch Newsom while he's down.

"A person like this escalates and it goes further and further until they commit a much worse act, which might be homicide or another brutal assault or attack," says Detective Fultz.

Newsom says investigators showed him the video last week, but even watching it doesn't jog any memory of the attack.

Newsom says he no longer has a lot of pain but takes medication to deal with feelings of depression that came after the beating. He is looking forward to the good news from doctors. They say he can now work again. Doing security again is an option, but with some conditions.

"Nothing late at night like I had," he said.

Detectives say the suspect was wearing a letterman or football jacket. The SUV is a 2006 or 2007 model. Call Crime Solvers at 780-1000 if you think you can help police.
