MEMPHIS, TN -

(WMC-TV) - Investigators say a handyman was stabbed by his own son while working in a southeast Shelby County home Friday.

Joe Toler died on the 7500 block of Starfire Cove Friday afternoon. Quenton Toler, 26, is charged with first-degree murder.

"It appears as if the son picked up a sharp instrument of some kind, looks like a knife, apparently stabbed his father in the throat," said Shelby County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Chip Washington.

Homeowner Willie Lomax was watching golf as the Tolers installed gas logs in another room.

He thought the elder Toler had a stroke, until he saw the blood.

"Put some towels on his neck like 911 told me and kept pressure on it," recalled Lomax.

By then, he says, Toler's son had walked away. Quenton was found about a mile from the home and was arrested.

Lomax has known Joe for nearly 20 years and said this was the first time he brought his son along on a job.
