Gov. Robert Bentley has approved a $80,000 grant to pay for signs to be placed at various locations along the 2,500-mile Alabama Scenic River Trail. The signs will help provide directions and other information to those navigating the network of rivers, streams and lakes.

The Scenic River Trail association anticipates posting at least 200 signs along the state waterways. The signs will help identify current location, lay of the waterway and take-out points, as well as locations for gas, food and lodging. The signs will also provide directions to points of interest and provide warnings to boaters about fast water and navigation obstacles.

"Throughout our history, Alabama's waterways have attracted interest, first as a means of exploration and commerce and now as a route for recreation and tourism," Bentley said. "The Alabama Scenic River Trail will allow people to travel our rivers and creeks, seeing the state much as our ancestors did."

The Scenic River Trail association believes the signs will encourage more recreational use of the state's waterways, and will also increase economic opportunities for outfitters and area merchants. The SRT association has already started a pilot program, placing signs along Terrapin Creek in northeast Alabama.

The grant was awarded from funds made available to the state under the Federal Highway Administration's Recreational Trails Program. The Alabama Department of Economic and Community Affairs administers the program in Alabama.
