MPS's 2014-15 pre-kindergarten registration dates set

Posted: Updated:

The Montgomery Public School System is setting the dates for parents of 4-year-olds who are interested in applying to the system's Pre-Kindergarten Program.

Registration for 2014-2015 will begin during the week of February 24 and will run through March 21, 2014.

Applications are available for download on the MPS homepage at www.mps.k12.al.us and will be accepted Monday –Thursday, 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. at the applicant's zoned school.

To be eligible for the district's pre-K program, a child must turn four years old on or before September 1. Children who will be five years old on or before September 1 are eligible for kindergarten. Parents should contact their zoned school for information on kindergarten registration.

The elementary schools that currently offer pre-kindergarten programs are Carver, Dozier, Martin Luther King, McKee Pre-K Center, Pintlala and Southlawn. Each class has a maximum of 18 students and are led by two teachers. There are also community agencies that offer pre-kindergarten programs in several MPS elementary schools. Head Start's programs are located at Catoma, Dozier, E.D. Nixon, McKee Pre-K Center and T.S Morris elementary schools. Family Guidance Center's Success by Six program is located at King and Davis elementary schools.

Parents should contact the Family Guidance Center at (334) 270-4100 or Head Start at (334) 264-0233 to receive information about their programs and registration procedures.

Space is limited and parents are encouraged to register their child for the program as early as possible.

Parents need the following documents in order to apply for the MPS Pre-K Program:

  • Original certified birth certificate
  • Proof of residency (electric, gas or water bill, apartment lease or house contract). Parents may only register at the school that serves their legal address.
  • Photo identification

Due to the high number of applicants, program participants will be chosen through a random selection process on April 14, 2014.  Written notification of acceptance status will be mailed to applicants on April 28, 2014. The deadline to return acceptance letters is May 9, 2014. Letters should be delivered or mailed to: McKee Pre-K Center, 4015 McInnis Road, 36116; or they may be faxed to (334) 284-7266.

Children who are not immediately selected will remain in the applicant pool until space becomes available. Schools will continue to accept applicants for the program should space become available in a class.

All students that are selected to participate in the MPS Pre-K Program are required to have a complete physical by a pediatrician, a dental exam and a current Alabama Blue Immunization Certificate (current shot record) to complete the registration process. A Pre-K Medical Documentation Form will be provided to all parents of students that are selected for the program. A parent whose child is accepted to the MPS Pre-K Program may also be required to verify their income.

For more information about pre-kindergarten registration, call the McKee Pre-K Center at (334) 223-6801.
