GAINESVILLE, FL (RNN) - Florida pulled away in the final seconds of the game with the help of some free throws to escape an upset by Auburn on Wednesday.

The Gators (24-2, 13-0 SEC) and the Tigers (12-12, 4-9) played a close game for the full 40 minutes. Auburn led 38-30 at halftime and continued to lead for the first 10 minutes of the second half. Florida and Auburn traded the lead for the rest of the game until the Gators' Patric Young and Scottie Wilbekin made a few free throws to give Florida the 71-66 win.

The Tigers dominated in field goals and 3-point shots, making 47.8 percent and 52.6 percent, respectively. The Gators shot 40 percent from the paint and 33.3 percent from downtown. Florida, however, held the advantage in free throws, making 82.1 percent compared to Auburn's 70.6 percent.

Young led the Gators with 17 points and two blocks. The Tigers' Tahj Shamsid-Deen also shot 17 points.

This was Florida's 31st consecutive home win and 18th victory in a row this season, a school record.

The Gators will hit the road to play Ole Miss on Saturday at noon ET. Auburn returns home to play Vanderbilt on Saturday at 6 p.m. ET.
