Southern Pines learns benefits of playgroups for shelter dogs

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Throughout this week the Southern Pines Animal Shelter has had an organization called Dogs Playing for Life teaching the staff and management about the benefits of having daily playgroups for dogs at the Shelter.

Aimee Sadler is the founder of the organization. She travels the country teaching shelter staff how to establish play groups for the dogs and the benefits. Other shelters that have participated in the program say the biggest gain from the playgroups is the reduction of noise and arousal levels. During the playgroups they get to socialize with other dogs, burn off excess energy, and get the necessary mental and physical stimulation.

Katherine Sammons, Operations Manager for Southern Pines, says getting Sadler and her organization to come to the shelter was largely due to the Humane Society of the United States.

"This is something Southern Pines alone would never have been able to do," said Sammons. " I want to give a big shout out to the HSUS for that and putting all this together for us.

Sammons says volunteers are always needed at the shelter and with the new playgroup program the need for more volunteers has increased.
