Activist and author Gloria Steinem speaks at Auburn University

AUBURN, AL (WTVM) -

Hundreds of people gathered at the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center Tuesday to listen to Gloria Steinem, one of the most influential women in America.

She was the guest speaker of the Auburn University Women's Leadership Institute's Extraordinary Women Lecture series.

"I want them to know to listen to themselves, not to me. What a gift we have to give each other is self-authority and self-empowerment. There's a lot more to change and I'm looking forward to it," says Steinem.

Recipient of the 2013 Presidential Medal of Freedom, Steinem is a leading authority on issues of equality.

In the 1960s and 1970s, she became nationally recognized as a leader of, and media spokeswoman for, the women's liberation movement.

"There's so much violence against females in the United States now for the first time I'm aware of in human history, females are less than half the human race on this globe which is serious. So we have a lot to do," explains Steinem.

As an American feminist, journalist and social and political activist, Steinem has founded many organizations including the Women's Media Center, the Ms. Foundation for Women, and Ms. Magazine, for which she served as editor for 15 years.

She has committed her career to improving women's rights and enhancing the power of the female voice.

"I want to express how important it is that we understand that human beings are human beings," says Steinem. "It's crucial that we've stop treating the women's movement as if it were over here and not fundamental to every activity and change of the human race."
