HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

An internationally known author and businessman with roots in the Mississippi Delta spoke to USM students Tuesday night during an annual event.

Clifton Taulbert, of Glen Allan in Washington County, was the guest speaker at a Branch-Armstrong Lecture Series at Bennett Auditorium.

Taulbert has authored more than a dozen books and is the recipient of the NAACP Image Award and a Mississippi Arts and Letters award for non-fiction.

His lecture is part of a series of Black History Month events at Southern Miss.

"I always talk about the future," said Taulbert. "And I always talk about what the future could look like if we, including myself and the students, understand the critical role we can play in shaping that future," he said.

"The theme this month was, 'The New Black,' said Valencia Walls, chair of the Black History Month Planning Committee at Southern Miss. "And that was formed by our committee, our Black History Month Committee, which is made up of students, faculty and staff. And the focus of, 'The New Black' is just pretty much saying that we're moving into our new selves," she said.

On Monday, student athletes and leaders, along with several local civil rights veterans, will be recognized during the "Eagle Awards."
