MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

If you've driven down Montgomery's Dexter Avenue recently you couldn't have missed the major construction project making its way up the historic street.

The first block of that new streetscape plan is nearly complete

For months, workers have been removing trees and ripping out sidewalks to make way for major improvements. Upgrades include new lighting, new sidewalks and new trees.

The first block is an example of the results we'll see all the way up the street over the next year. The nearly $6 million project should be completed by January.

The timing of the project is no coincidence.

"Montgomery's gonna be front and center for the entire 2015. We have two anniversaries, the 60th for the bus boycott and the 50th for the Selma to Montgomery," Montgomery Mayor Todd Strange said. "The timing of the project at Dexter Avenue was entirely driven by having it ready for March of 2015."

At 6, WSFA 12 News reporter Bethany Wales will take a look at what revitalizing this stretch means for local businesses.
