AL weather preparedness sales tax holiday this weekend

MONTGOMERY, AL (WSFA) -

Gov. Robert Bentley, on Thursday, encouraged Alabamians to take advantage of Alabama's weather preparedness sales tax holiday in order to be prepared for the next severe weather situation..

The third annual sales tax holiday started Friday and ends Sunday at midnight. The holiday gives residents a chance to buy certain severe weather preparedness items free of state sales tax.

The covered items must cost $60 or less, except for portable generators, which are covered as long as they cost $1,000 or less.

Covered items include: certain radios, certain batteries, plywood, first aid kits, smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. For a full list, visit the Alabama Department of Revenue's website.

Some Alabama counties and cities are also exempting certain items from local taxes during the same time period.
