LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - State Senator and U.S. Senate hopeful Chris McDaniel made a campaign stop back home in Jones County Saturday night to speak at an education summit at an organization which helps children with after-school tutoring.
McDaniel was in Laurel to speak to folks at the Tutoring Club.
He talked about some cultural issues, but mainly he re-affirmed his stance against Common Core. That's a nationwide initiative to establish consistent standards for math and english.
McDaniel said education is best handled at the local level.
"This type of issue is right at the heart of what we conservatives believe in and that is local control over these issues," he said. "I think there are others out there, like Ted Cruz, and Mike Lee and Rand Paul who believe just as we believe. We're going to do the very best we can to get rid of Common Core once and for all," he said.
McDaniel will face longtime incumbent senator Thad Cochran in the June 24 Republican Primary.
