Animal shelters work together in first mega adoption event

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Three Pine Belt animal shelters are teaming up for the first time to make it easier for you to open up your home to a homeless pet. Southern Pines Animal Shelter, the Hub City Humane Society and Happy Healthy Pet Adoption are co-hosting a Mega Adoption Weekend at the Hattiesburg PetSmart.

Dozens of dogs have been up for adoption in the parking lot, while plenty of cats have been taking it easy indoors as they wait to be taken to their new permanent homes.

Representatives from the American Red Cross have also been on hand to talk about their new, Pet First Aid app for cell phones.

"It's nice to have everybody out here together, because there are so many animals in our area that are just in need of a home," said Ginny Sims, manager of the Southern Pines Animal Shelter.

"The Hattiesburg public may not be aware of the enormity of the homelessness of pets in their community and it takes all of our organizations working together to really solve this problem," said Ro Cannon, pet adoption specialist for the Hub City Humane Society.

"A lot of people shop (at PetSmart) and sometimes they think, one of these days, I want to get a dog, but if they have a dog right in front of them, it may be that day," said John Waggener, board president for Happy Healthy Pet Adoption.

The Mega Adoption Weekend continues Sunday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.
