JEFFERSON COUNTY, AL (WBRC) -

Authorities confirm the missing Cessna has been located in the Goodner Mountain area of Jefferson County north of Clay. There were no survivors.

Jefferson County Commissioner Joe Knight joined multiple agencies Saturday morning in the search to locate the missing aircraft.

"It's a sad situation," commissioner Knight commented about the wreckage located Saturday afternoon. As of Saturday afternoon, there was no confirmation of the number of passengers on the flight.

The Federal Aviation Administration issued a statement concerning a missing plane believed to be in the Trussville area.

They say the aircraft is a Cessna 210  that lost contact with the control tower at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth Airport at about 10:20 p.m. Friday night as it was approaching the airport. The flight originated from Jackson-Evers Intl. Airport in Jackson, MS.

According to Fox6 meteorologists, the weather conditions Friday night were very breezy. Winds were out of northwest gusting to 25 mph.

Trussville Police Chief Don Sively says his department was notified by the Birmingham Air Traffic Control about a possible missing plane in the Goodner Mountain area around 10:30 p.m.

Trussville police units along with Jefferson County Sheriff Office deputies searched the dense mountain side through the night and into Saturday morning.

The Civil Air Patrol and a Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Air Support Unit joined the search effort Saturday morning. By noon, the units from the sky spotted an area with debris in the Goodner Mountain area. It took units on ground about an hour to reach the site of the small aircraft crash.

Goodner Mountain residents stepped in to help police units trek the rough terrain. Neighbor Chase Evans said there was no easy way to get to the site of the cash.

"All is it is mountains and ravines and little small water creeks. There are no roads to get to it," Evans said.

"The plane seemed to have hit a pine tree on the way down," Knight added.

Randy Christian with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office said their agency contacted the FAA and NTSB. An investigator from the FAA has arrived at the crash site.
