LUFKIN, TX (KTRE) -

Residents at the Neches House Assisted Living in Lufkin got a Valentine's surprise Thursday night during their first annual Valentine Pageant.

Elvis himself hosted the event singing some of his favorite and most popular tunes like "Jailhouse Rock," and "All Shook Up." When the residents weren't busy tapping their feet to the music, or getting a surprise dance with the "King of Rock and Roll," they enjoyed picking out their favorite ‘models' in the pageant.

A handful of residents got the chance to dress up in their favorite duds, get their hair and makeup done, and showcase their personalities and award-winning smiles on the red carpet. A king and queen was crowned at the event, but several residents got the chance to win the award for Best Smile and Best Personality.

Kelli Boyles, the new Activity Director for the center, said she wanted to do something like this because she knew most of the residents don't get a chance to experience events, especially for Valentine's Day. Candy Riley, the residence director, added that it's the first time in probably a long time most of the residents are getting a Valentine's surprise.

"You know, they invited their families and they're very, very excited and especially with Elvis here. That's their generation. That's the man, they're idol, that they grew up with so that's something special that Kelli decided to do tonight for them," Riley said.

84-year-old Charlie "Chuck" Skinner was one of the contestants in the pageants, and says although he didn't win, he had a blast.

"It's great. This is great. It's a good place to be and a lot of good people work here and they just make sure we have a good—it's good. It's good to be here," Skinner said.

90-year-old Maureen Sachtleben also didn't win, but had a great time getting her daughter to help her curl her hair.

"Did you think it was wonderful? I did. More fun than I've had in a long time," Sachtleben said.
