LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

Early Thursday morning the Lubbock ISD school board approved Wayne Hutchinson as the new athletic director and head football coach at Monterey High School.

Hutchinson previously spent eight years at Stamford High School in Stamford, Texas where he had major success, including back to back state titles at the class 1A level.

The former Stamford coach inherits a Monterey football program that had made the playoffs the past four years under Head Coach Todd Pearson. Pearson resigned following last season.

The main question everyone has for Hutchinson is how will he handle the jump from class 1A Stamford to class 5A Monterey.

Hutchinson addressed the question promptly:

"I've been asked that question quite a bit, about jumping from such a small classification to a large classification," Hutchinson said.

"It's still all about kids. Kids are kids in 1A. They are the same all the way through 5A. It's going to be my job to go build relationships, try to gain some trust from those guys, and get some discipline going, and teach a lot about character. Once I do that, establish that, and get that rapport with my coaches and the kids, I think we can build a champion."

Coach Hutchinson brings plenty of experience to the table in turning programs around. He took the Stamford Bulldogs from 2-28 in three seasons when he arrived, to back to back state championships.

Hutchinson credits his success to his vast high school coaching experience:

"I've had a lot of experience. I've coached at pretty much every level. I coached at Abilene High and I was mentored by Steve Warren. He's made the playoffs about the last 15 years at Abilene High. I just want to bring that to Lubbock and I want to install that at Lubbock Monterey and just see where it takes us."

Shortly after the school board meeting, the Plainsmen community welcomed Hutchinson with open arms. The entire school gathered in the Monterey High School cafeteria and surprised him when he arrived.

He wasted no time addressing the students and faculty, grabbing the microphone and saying:

"It's a great day to be a Plainsman!"
