Salvation Army needs your help after long, cold winter

LUBBOCK, TX (KCBD) -

This year's winter season has been much colder than ones the Hub City has seen in the past. For 82 days this winter, temperatures have dipped below freezing.

That means more nights the Salvation Army has spent at capacity and more supplies distributed to those in need.

Dianne Taylor said they have been well above capacity this week.

"In the past three days, there have been at least 57 on our emergency cots in our men's shelter," Taylor said.

The emergency warming center was designed to house up to eight additional people when all the rooms are filled.

Just Eatherly with the Salvation Army says that serving that many people so frequently is taking a toll on their stock of some warm winter items.

"We are able to get blankets from the state and private donations of winter coats are helping to stock us up," Eatherly said. "But what we really need is gloves and scarves because those aren't items the state provides."

But that's not all they need.

Taylor helps to keep the men's side of the shelter stocked with the necessities but she said they are lacking several items.

"Bar soap, deodorant, shampoo and conditioner and we are out of razors."

She indicated to an entirely bare shelf, showing that the dwindling resources are now gone.

"This is what we have...which isn't a lot, usually the shelf is supposed to be full," Taylor said.

If you would like to donate items to the Salvation Army, you can do so at their location downtown on the corner of Avenue J and 16th Street.

Items they are asking for include:

  • Towels
  • Gloves
  • Shampoo
  • Conditioner
  • Bar Soap
  • Scarves
  • Knit Caps
