Walmart Express stores coming to the MS Coast

GULFPORT, MS (WLOX) -

The world's largest retailer is known to be your one stop shop for everything. There are more than 11,000 Walmart Super Centers across 27 countries, and now they're downsizing to Walmart Express.

"It's basically a grocery store about a third of the size of the super stores for Walmart," Gulfport City Councilman Ricky Dombrowski said.

The new express stores will soon be located in Gulfport, D'Iberville and Biloxi, and be strategically placed near other larger markets to relieve sale stress.

"This will actually be a community market store for the neighborhood. So this is situated away from those stores to allow people to go get their groceries a little closer."

The mini Walmarts may be being built for the community, but residents living near one of the store locations on the corner of Anniston and Pass Road in Gulfport, have their own concerns.

"I expect traffic speeds to increase. Just the general overall compensation of the people coming to this area that the infrastructure that the area cannot support it," said resident Dean Yake.

Others see the store as a close advantage.

"That would be good for me and neighbors in the neighborhood, as far as convenience to go to the store." Jerry Shankle Sr. said.

Again, increased traffic and residential safety seems to be a common concern.

"It's going to increase the traffic tremendously around here if it does, and that's going to be bad for us," Shankle said.

"We have the Anniston Elementary school behind us. That's going to be a concern for a lot of parents being able to get to their children on time. The school buses currently run on Pine Street to get to the school so that's going to be another issue that's going to have to be dealt with," Yake said.

The store and its entrances will be off of Pass Road, so officials say residents shouldn't worry about heavier traffic in their neighborhoods.
