KSLA News 12 Editorial: Feb. 6th-Winter Hazards

Over the past few weeks, we've experienced something we don't see much of around here--winter weather. And now, it looks like more is on the way.

That often means poor, and sometimes dangerous, driving conditions. When that occurs, law enforcement agencies will ask people to stay off of area roadways. Unfortunately, many motorists ignore those pleas and some of them will end up stuck or in crashes.

So keep this in mind, if and when weather conditions deteriorate:

  • If it is not imperative for you to drive, please don't.
  • If you are driving expect slippery roadway conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses.
  • Reduce your speed
  • Allow plenty of space between you and other vehicles
  • Wear your seatbelt.
  • Also, be on the lookout for slow moving highway department vehicles on area roadways as they work to make it safer for all of us.

Luckily, we don't get the severe winter storms common elsewhere but what we do get can be hazardous.

I'm James Smith.

State Police Supt. Col. Mike Edmonson needs to address this inexcusable behavior directly and restore the public's confidence. He should be fully transparent in his investigation into the matter and should invite an outside entity to look into the matter.

Be on the lookout for kids. They seem to dart out from everywhere. They are certainly not looking out for you; so please look out for them.
