JACKSON COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

One man is in jail and another is on the run after a Tuesday car chase in Jackson County led investigators to seizing $40,000 worth of synthetic marijuana.

According to officials with the South Mississippi Metro Enforcement Team, 29-year-old Richard Earl Byrd of New Orleans is charged with possession of a schedule I controlled substance.

Authorities said Byrd was the passenger in a vehicle that took off after police attempted to perform a traffic stop. The driver jumped out of the vehicle while it was still moving and eluded police. Byrd remained in the vehicle which struck a tree and became disabled.

Agents moved in and found 8,000 grams of spice with an estimated street value of $40,000 in the vehicle.

Byrd is being held at the Jackson County Adult Detention Center on a $100,000 bond. Authorities said the driver of the vehicle is still at large, and they expect to make more arrests.
