PETAL, MS (WDAM) -

The Petal Fire Department has been recognized by the Muscular Dystrophy Association for its efforts to raise money to help those living with that disease.

Petal firefighters have received the 2013 Golden Axe Award for raising nearly $9,000 in their Fill the Boot campaign.  It was the most money raised by a small city fire department in the state last year.

PFD was one of only three departments in Mississippi to receive the honor. Others included Jackson and Horn Lake.

"It's more about the people of Petal who donated all the money and that's kind of why we wanted to get it out there and thank them because they're the ones who are getting the recognition for it, through the State and through MDA," said Shane Pickett, assistant chief of the Petal Fire Department.

PFD also won the same award in 2009.
