JACKSON – The Mississippi State Senate passed legislation placing "In God We Trust" on the official state seal, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves said today.
"I'm proud the state seal will reflect the values Mississippians hold dear," Lt. Gov. Reeves said. "Mississippians have a strong faith in God. I appreciate Sen. Gandy and Sen. Polk for their hard work on this bill."
Gov. Phil Bryant called on the Legislature to add "In God We Trust" to the state seal in his State of the State address.
The bill, Senate Bill 2681, also guarantees government cannot interfere with Mississippians' right to exercise religion. Sen. Phillip Gandy, R-Waynesboro, sponsored the bill, and Sen. John Polk, R-Hattiesburg, offered an amendment to add "In God We Trust" to the state seal.
Senate Bill 2681 heads to the House for consideration.
