HANCOCK COUNTY, MS (WLOX) -

Hancock County leaders say the precautions taken in the county helped prevent a repeat of the traffic nightmare they saw last Friday night. Most of the roads and bridges in Hancock County reopened by mid-afternoon Wednesday with one exception - the Bay St. Louis Bridge.

Cars maneuvered the Pearl River Bridge and the Jourdan River bridges on Interstate 10 and on Highway 603 with ease. But drivers trying to cross the Bay St. Louis Bridge on Highway 90 were not as lucky.

The Bay Bridge has been closed since about 4pm Tuesday. The icy bridge posed a problem for drivers trying to cross the bridge.

"I've been running into this stuff since Texas, so I'm going to have to find a place to go," said big rig driver Travis Ward. "I'm headed to Jacksonville, Florida. It's been tough and it's going to get worse."

"We don't know what we're getting tonight. It really depends on the moisture left on the roads. And the timing of the freezing and the cold weather," said Hancock County EOC Director Brian Adam.

Adam is Director of the Hancock County Emergency Management Agency. He said residents should stay off the roads.

"Stay home, if at all possible. And if they must go out on the road, use extreme caution when they're driving," urged Adam.

The curfew put in place in Hancock County last night was lifted Wednesday morning.
