WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) - As snow and ice blanketed downtown Wilmington Wednesday, most restaurants and businesses closed up shop, however, a few chose to stay open for people that were out and about.

"I knew there were certain people that were going to be here, regardless of the weather," said head waitress at the White Front Breakfast House, Veronica Woods. She said not going to work, just wasn't an option and braved the weather so she could help open up the restaurant at 6 a.m.

"I was debating whether I was being smart in doing it, but I made it here in one piece with no incident," said Woods.

Most customers were a little surprised and very happy to find the breakfast spot open.

"I thought they would be closed," said Bill Jackson. "But, I just passed by and it was open, I was like, 'oh, I'm in luck.'"

"I was glad to see the open sign," said Karen Hunsburger.

They weren't the only ones with the open sign, Chops Deli on Front Street also stayed open to customers.

"Lots of people have work off, and they have the day to kill, so we thought we would be here for them and make some sandwiches," said co-owner Brad Corpening.  He said opening up was a "no-brainer" because most of their employees walk to work and would be able to get there safely.

Both businesses said they planned on being open on Thursday.
