NEW ORLEANS, LA (WVUE) - A hard freeze is forecast again for both the north and south shore Thursday night, and the DOTD is urging motorists not to drive during hazardous conditions.

Residents on both sides of Lake Pontchartrain were advised to take full precautions Wednesday night, protecting people, pipes, pets and plants.

DOTD has the following tips for drivers:

Drive slowly, carefully, and avoid driving while distracted

Allow for extra driving time

Reduce speeds when visibility is low

Make sure there is plenty of room between vehicles

Look out for black ice - a thin, transparent layer of ice accumulation that can be visually hard to detect on bridges, overpasses, off-ramps and in shady spots.

As conditions across the state continue to improve, Troopers and DOTD officials are carefully monitoring road conditions and assessing overpasses, bridges, and roadway surfaces for potential hazards. The Louisiana State Police continue to deploy extra patrols, nearly doubling the amount of troopers on duty, while partnering with the State Fire Marshal's Office, DPS Police, and several local agencies.

Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development and Louisiana National Guard representatives continue to use salt, sand and de-icing agents on bridges, overpasses and roadways where needed.
