Motorists in South Mississippi urged to stay off roadways

This is a news release from MDOT

HATTIESBURG, MISS.— The Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) is urging motorists to stay off roadways in South Mississippi this evening. Icy roadway conditions are reported on all state highways throughout the southern portion of the state, including bridges and overpasses.

"Conditions across South Mississippi are extremely hazardous, as our area has experienced unprecedented amounts of frozen precipitation throughout the day," said Kelly Castleberry, MDOT District Six Engineer.  Castleberry says that MDOT forces continue to concentrate efforts on the interstate system.  Motorists should limit travel to emergency use only, and if forced to travel, drivers should expect to see ice along roadways and bridges.

MDOT personnel are actively responding to this storm event, and continue to work with a number of local and state agencies to manage travel on state highways.

Motorists are urged to watch out for personnel who are working along state roadways.
