CASTLE HAYNE, NC (WECT) - "Always prepare for the unexpected."

That's the warning from the North Carolina Department of Transportation as roadways across Southeastern North Carolina begin to feel the impact of winter weather.

The NCDOT facility in Castle Hayne will monitor all of the roadways in New Hanover county with nine trucks on standby to deliver salt once the snowfall begins.

"Once it starts to come down we'll send out the trucks." said engineer Jerry Taylor. "You don't want to put salt in the beds of the trucks too early or it can jammed in the spreader, it needs to go in fresh."

To make work easier for NCDOT crews and drives alike, a salt-brine solution was applied to area roads ahead of the storm system.

"It will keep the precipitation from bonding to the pavement, so during our first snow plow event the ice will come off the roads much easier." Taylor said.

75 additional tons of salt were brought in to the Castle Hayne facility in anticipation of the weather. Additional salt, trucks and crews can be called in from neighboring counties if needed.
