Sacred Heart High holds Faith and Justice Conference

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Many members of the community are joining hands to put their faith into action around issues of poverty and justice.

On Saturday, a Faith and Justice Conference was held at Sacred Heart High School where residents learned more on the social needs of the community. Along with participating in breakout session, attendees listened to Keynote Speakers University of Southern Mississippi professor Dr. Wesley Johnson and Father Fred Kammer of Loyola University New Orleans.

With the theme of "Who is my neighbor? Journeying as the Family of God", members of the community received a greater understanding of their role in charity and justice issues.
“In addition to kind of the charitable outreach that all of the faith communities are called to, the other part of this session is about the justice responsibility of the scriptures, which is for us to protect those who are in need from oppression and exploitation,” said Father Kammer. “It's more than just giving people bread, is asking why are people hungry in the richest nation in the world? So it's both responsibility for charity and responsibility for justice in the community.”

According to Father Kammer, the Faith and Justice Conference was last held by the parish seven years ago.
