ELLISVILLE – It was a showdown between the only unbeaten MACJC South Division teams here Tuesday night at A.B. Howard Gymnasium.
And the game certainly lived up to its billing.
The 20th-ranked Jones County Junior College Bobcats outscored Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College 25-15 over the game's final 8:59 and defeated the Bulldogs 88-78 before a large crowd of supporters.
JCJC improves to 13-1 overall, 5-0 in the division. MGCCC falls to 11-3 overall and 4-1 in league play.
In the women's game, the Lady Bobcats won their seventh straight game, crushing MGCCC, 94-62. JCJC is now 10-4 overall, 4-1 in the division. The Lady Bulldogs fall to 5-9 and 1-4.
The Bobcats will travel to Pearl River Community College on Thursday. The women's game tips off at 5 p.m., followed by the men's game at 7 p.m. Both games will air on www.jcjc.tv.
MGCCC goes to Meridian Community College on Thursday.
Bobcats 88, Bulldogs 78
Thaddeus "Pop" Hall scored 30 points, including 19 in the second half, as the Bobcats remained unbeaten in league play.
The Bulldogs held a 41-38 halftime lead and took a 46-40 lead with 18:48 to play when Roger Woods scored. But the Bobcats scored 12 straight points and went ahead 52-46 with 15:15 remaining when Hall canned two free throws.
MGCCC rallied and went up 59-55 when Chris Bilbo scored at the 10:49 mark. After two Leroy "Truck" Fludd free throws, Hall then made two straight 3-point shots from deep off the right wing, giving the Bobcats a 63-61 lead. Two Josh Carroll free throws tied the game at 63-63 with 8:59 left.
Moments later, the Bobcats were up 71-65 when Hall was fouled hard on a drive to the goal. MGCCC's Woods was also hit with two technical fouls and was ejected. But the Bobcats could not capitalize, missing five straight free throws on the possession.
Hall did make two free throws with 5:39 left to put the Bobcats up 76-67. The Bulldogs had one final run left and got within 76-73 with 4:23 to play on a Bilbo basket.
JCJC then iced the game with an 11-0 run, capped by a Fludd 3-point play with 54 seconds left, which gave the Bobcats an 87-76 lead.
The Bulldogs led for most of the first half and held a pair of five-point leads, the final one being at 39-34 with 1:10 showing when Bilbo made a free throw.
After Hall's effort, Fludd had 17 points and 9 rebounds, Zuppardo had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Bryce Jones had 11 points. Hall and Fludd each had four steals, while Adrian Williams had 4 assists.
Carroll led MGCCC with 21 points, while Woods added 19, Bilbo had 14 and Tony Bridges and Rashad Perkins finished with 10 each.
Lady Bobcats 94, Lady Bulldogs 62
The Lady Bobcats never trailed as they whipped MGCCC.
A Kaylan Hughes' bucket put JCJC ahead 23-8 with 12:19 left in the first half. LaTisha McCullum's third 3-pointer gave JCJC its longest lead of the opening half at 45-22 with 4:05 left.
MGCCC cut the lead to 49-30 at halftime.
The Lady Bobcats continued the pressure in the second half and took a 76-44 lead with 11:50 to play on a Hughes' bucket. JCJC matched that advantage at 84-52 with 8:02 to play when Precious Jefferson scored. They equaled their biggest lead at the end of the game.
Hughes finished the contest with 23 points and 9 rebounds, while Starla Daggans had 14 points, 7 assists and 3 steals. McCullum had 13 points, while Jefferson had 11 points and 8 rebounds.
The Lady Bobcats were 37-of-77 from the floor for 48 percent and out rebounded the Lady Bulldogs, 45-26.
DeNesha Dillard had 16 points and Samara Dingiswayo added 12 for MGCCC.
