Memorial Concert and Art Installation set to honor Dana Ragsdale

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

This is a news release from the Library of Hattiesburg

The Library of Hattiesburg will offer more than just words on a page when it serves as the multimedia venue for a unique event constructed in tribute to Dana Ragsdale. The event, beginning at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 16, will include a memorial concert interwoven with readings and a dedication of the artwork donated to the library by Ragsdale.

In her 34-year tenure as professor of music at the University of Southern Mississippi, Ragsdale contributed much to the Hattiesburg community. She passed away in August of 2012; however, she continues to enrich lives through the donation of her art collection and by inspiring her former students and colleagues to perform works in her name.

Professional musicians from around the country have collaborated to form the music portion of the event. They include harpsichordists Shawn Leopard from Jackson and Pamela Pollard Finch from Petal; USM Associate Professor of Violin, Stephen Redfield; violist and recent guest conductor of the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra Ivan del Prado; Hattiesburg Arts Council Executive Director and cello instructor Rebekah Stark Johnson; recorder players Jody Miller from Atlanta and Ron Hancock from Pensacola; and percussionist and Assistant Director of Bands at Southwest Mississippi Community College Jason Mathena.

The highlight of the concert will be the premier of The Quill's Notch, a piece written as a tribute to Ragsdale by composer and performer Ron Hancock. Readings and information about the donated artwork will be provided by local Hattiesburg artists Barbara-Ann Carver-Hunt, Claudia Cartee, and Amanda Call.

The event is free of charge. The library is located at 329 Hardy Street. Call 601.582.4461 for more information. Online, visit https://www.usm.edu/news/article/memorial-concert-and-art-installation-honoring-dana-ragsdale-set-feb-16
