Vanderbilt picks up 1st SEC win against Mizzou

NASHVILLE, TN (RNN) - Better defense and 3-point shooting helped propel Vanderbilt past Missouri, winning 78-75 at home on Thursday night.

The Commodores (9-6, 1-2 SEC) shot 12 of their 32 3-point attempts, a season high. They also made 39 percent of their field goals and 74 percent from the free throw line. The Tigers (13-3, 1-2) also shot 39 percent from the paint but made 86 percent of their free throws; however, they only made 26 percent of their 3-pointers.

Vanderbilt's four steals and seven blocks - both more than Mizzou's - helped the Commodores limit the Tigers to 32 points in the first half and 40 in the second.

Rod Odom had a good night, leading Vanderbilt with a career-high 24 points, eight rebounds and four blocks. Odom is now the Commodores' leading scorer following the removal of Eric McClellan from the team last week.

Jabari Brown led Missouri with 22 points, while Jordan Clarkson added 18 and Earnest Ross added 11. Ross led with nine rebounds, five assists and one steal.

This was Vanderbilt's first SEC win of the season and Mizzou's first road loss of the season.
