Hattiesburg sorority celebrates 106th anniversary

HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) -

Members of a Hattiesburg chapter of a national sorority celebrated the founding of their organzation Wednesday.

Members of the Theta Sigma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. took part in a luncheon at Patio 44, recognizing the 106th anniversary of that organization.

It was founded on Jan. 15, 1908.

The Hub City chapter began in 1968 with 17 members.  Currenty, they have 76 members.

"We're celebrating our 106th year of our founding and so, we're just honoring that with a little public luncheon," said Sonya Varnell, president of the Theta Sigma Omega Chapter. "So, 106 years of service to all mankind, that's a big deal for any organization to be around for 106 years," she said.

Alpha Kappa Alpha also has an undergraduate chapter at Southern Miss.
