Laurel holds MLK "Salute to Greatness Banquet"

LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - A Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. "Salute to Greatness Banquet" was held in Laurel Saturday night.

Although MLK Day is a few days away, his life and achievements were recognized at the banquet. The event held at Sanderson Farms was put on by the Dr. Martin Luther King Celebration Committee of the Pine Belt.

Aside from paying tribute to Dr. King, many attendees were also recognized and honored for the great things that they too have done in the Pine Belt area.

"I would like to just tell people to remember that there is a struggle, the struggle is continuing and with the things that's going on throughout our cities and our communities every day we must not forget the man nor the dream and the reason that we're here, not only today but through the upcoming events for the Dr. King celebration," said event coordinator Polly Windham.

Although the committee has been denied a permit to hold their annual MLK parade, Windham said she believes it will still go on and take place on its scheduled date January 18. To read more on the Laurel MLK parade permit denied, click HERE.
