LAUREL, MS (WDAM) - A new pet rescue organization which specializes in caring for and finding homes for severely-neglected animals hosted its largest fund-raising event to date in Laurel Saturday. Southern Cross Animal Rescue (S.C.A.R.) welcomed visitors to the Pet Sense store for a "Family Fun Day."
During the event, some children got their faces painted, while other folks looked for a new family pet.
The event raised funds to complete work on the organization's new pet housing and surgery center just east of Laurel.
"Every time we have an event, it's just another opportunity for us to network with the community," said Heather Williams, president and co-founder of Southern Cross Animal Rescue. "Especially in a pet store, it's really fun, because we have people coming in already with pets on their mind. Whether they're looking to get a pet, or getting supplies for pets they already have, we get a chance to kind of talk to them," she said.
S.C.A.R. has some other fund-raising activities coming up, including a craft beer event called "Mugs for Mutts" and an outdoor event called, "Bark in the Park."
