HATTIESBURG, MS (WDAM) - Planning is underway for Hattiesburg's third annual Mardi Gras parade.
Parade planners met Thursday morning to finalize parade route and time as well as other logistics. This year's parade will take place on Saturday, February 22 with a start time of 11 a.m.
"This year's theme for the parade will be 'Sailing the Seven Seas,'" said parade director Melissa Davis. "We felt that that was a very exciting theme. It leaves the door open for all of the parrot heads, pirates and the Jimmy Buffet fans... and different themed floats."
Davis expects approximately 100 floats in this year's parade, which would make this the biggest Mardi Gras parade yet for Hattiesburg.
"I think we're creeping up onto the Mardi Gras map, the official New Orleans schedule," said Davis, pointing out this was a goal of the committee when the first parade was held in 2012. "It's very exciting."
The parade route will begin on Frontage Road off Highway 49 headed south toward Hardy Street. From there, the parade will turn west onto Hardy traveling to 38th Avenue where floats will turn and the parade will end at 4th and 38th Avenues.
