Active flu season causes vaccine shortages at some locations

SUMRALL, MS (WDAM) - Some national pharmacies, including Walgreens and CVS, have reported flu vaccine shortages in the Pine Belt. One location has been out of flu shots for weeks. But the CVS and Walgreens locations in Hattiesburg expect to receive shipments of more flu shots within a week.

Sumrall Drug Store, however, has plenty flu shots. They cost $25, but are covered by most insurance plans. The Forrest County Health Department also has plenty of vaccinations.

"Usually when you order your flu shots you order them before the year begins. So if people are running out, it may be because their order was placed back in early fall," said Beau Haden, pharmacist at Sumrall Drug Store. "So far we've probably given out 300 shots or so, which is our first year to be doing this."

Flu season has been active so far and lasts until springtime. If you haven't received one already, doctors and other experts advise you to get a flu shot.
