TUSCALOOSA, AL (RNN) - In the 2014 conference opener for both teams, the Vanderbilt Commodores fell to the Alabama Crimson Tide 68-63 Tuesday night.

Despite dominating the game from the foul line and off the glass, Vanderbilt (8-5) began its SEC schedule on the wrong foot - a road loss - throwing away a small, early lead.

But trailing early on didn't bother the Crimson Tide (7-7). Midway through the first half, Alabama tied the game and followed up with an 11-1 run. After leading by 10 points going into the second half, Vanderbilt could not catch up with Alabama.

The Tide led by as many as 18 points before the Commodores mounted a failed comeback, powered by their excellent free throw shooting. The Commodores pulled within three points with 1:59 remaining, but a Retin Obasohan 3-pointer and two Trevor Releford free throws sealed the win for the Crimson Tide.

Forward Rod Odom led the Commodores with 20 points and snatched down 10 rebounds, with center Damian Jones adding 16 points in the loss. Releford led the Crimson Tide with 16 points, with Obasohan and forward Shannon Hale both scoring 15 points.

Vanderbilt shot 88 percent from the foul line compared to Alabama's 63.2 percent. Both teams averaged evenly from downtown and on the floor: Vanderbilt shot 45 percent from field goal range and 46 percent from downtown, while Alabama shot 48 percent from the floor and 37.5 percent from the 3-point line. The Commodores out-rebounded the Crimson Tide 32-25.

Alabama's next game will be on the road against the Georgia Bulldogs on Saturday. Vanderbilt will welcome the No. 14-ranked Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday.
