Metro recycling center cluttered after holiday rush

Posted: Updated:
NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

A mess that has piled up over the holidays has raised some questions about Metro's recycling program, as the effort to save the environment seems to only be creating more trash.

"I thought it was pretty strange to see this much trash everywhere and people didn't know what to do but to add to it," said recycler Kaye Pryor.

At the city's Bellevue recycling center, cardboard boxes and other recyclables were left piled high on the ground and scattered outside the overflowing bins.

Metro Public Works says the mess was a result of a holiday rush to recycle. Its crews empty the bins once a week, and they work to stay on top of the mess. They say if you do run into a mess, they don't want to discourage you from recycling. They say just give them a call and they will come out more often.

"I think people just have to be more responsible in how they dispose of their recyclables," said recycler Randall Brady.
