Hattiesburg High School held a ribbon cutting ceremony Monday morning to officially reopen their gymnasium and field house.
The field house was heavily damaged during last years February 10 tornado. Many areas of the campus sustained major damage including the gym, baseball field, the bus yard, and the roof of the main school building. The roof on the gym was damaged letting water into the building, warping the basketball floor and damaging the weight room.
Total damage to the campus was estimated at around $7 million.
"Now is the first time we are able to open the facility for all our activities," said James Bacchus, Superintendent, Hattiesburg Public Schools. "Our athletes don't have to be outside anymore and we're really excited about having these facilities at this time. We still have a challenge with baseball, but hopefully by the 2015 season they will be able to play on their own field."
Bacchus anticipates all tornado related repairs to the campus will be completed by the end of 2015.
