COUTERSY OF SOUTHERN MISS ATHLETICS
HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Southern Miss women's basketball team broke a 2-2 tie, taking control using a 25-0 run over a 10-minute span and cruised to a 90-49 win over visiting William Carey.
Southern Miss improved to 11-2 on the season.
"We got off to a great start, working on our defense and that was our focus," head coach Joye Lee-McNelis said. "We felt it was important to create opportunities out of our defense and I thought we were able to accomplish that."
Five Lady Eagles scored in double figures as Jerontay Clemons led the way with 18 points while Jamierra Faulkner and Ashley Folsom with 13 points each, Brittanny Dinkins had 11 and Tamara Jones chipped in 10. Faulkner also handed out 12 assists for her fourth double-double while grabbing a team-best seven rebounds and five steals.
"I thought we got some production at different times from different people off the bench," said McNelis. "I thought that was a huge plus for us. I was pleased with what our team was able to do. It was our last warm-up before conference and now the real season begins."
Southern Miss scored the first two points of the game before Carey tied the game with a bucket a minute later. From there, the Lady Eagles reeled off the next 25 points over a 10-minutes span in taking a 27-2 lead. The Lady Eagles finished the half shooting 50 percent while holding the Crusaders to just 13.8 percent from the field. Southern Miss led 42-12 at the half.
Carey opened the second half outscoring the Eagles 5-2 in the first three two minutes. The Lady Eagles got on track and scored seven unanswered points in taking a 44-18 lead. The visitors were able to cut the margin under 30, 56-30, after using an 11-4 run, but that would be as close as Carey would get.
Southern Miss finished the game shooting 56.3 percent from the field and held a 44-33 rebounding edge. The Lady Eagles got 51 points from the bench while scoring 33 points off 26 Carey turnovers.
Tiffany Sims led Carey with 16 points and six rebounds while Haleigh Arcement added 14 points.
