Bulger's Beat: Revelers begin new year with plenty of traditions

NASHVILLE, TN (WSMV) -

New Year's Day in Nashville means a cold dip in the lake for some, and a big bowl of black-eyed peas for many.

Percy Priest Lake loses its calm every Jan. 1 at noon. It's the day the wacky meet the water for the Polar Bear Plunge, when hundreds of brave swimmers share the same frozen feeling for a good cause.

"Why not? It just gets the year off to a great start, and it punctuates the beginning of the year. It gives you that feeling that you're into something new," said participant Vance Berry.

If the New Year's bite of cold water isn't for you, how about a bite of lucky legumes.

"Black-eyed peas are a New Year's tradition in our family for years, whether it's regular black-eyed peas, or black-eyed pea dip, we'll be having both," said Kroger shopper Mamie Brett.

Southern folklore says eating black-eyed peas will bring good luck in the new year. At Edley's Bar-B-Que, it looked like customer Brian Gay is in for a very good year.

"You know, I don't leave any black-eyed peas behind, especially when they're prepared well," Gay said.
